Disability Statistics

The information found on this page is based on data from the American Community Survey (ACS). The ACS produces population, demographic and housing unit estimates, however, it is the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program that produces and disseminates the official estimates of the population for the nation, states, counties, cities and towns and estimates of housing units for states and counties. The following are estimates with margins of error ranging from +/- 107 to +/- 229 . By analyzing this data the Town of Pembroke gains insight on the types of disabilities residents in the town have which guides us in strategic decision-making on future ADA projects.

Disability V Population

In 2012 the Town of Pembroke had 1,711 residents with a classified disability, 1,582 in 2013, 1,774 in 2014, 1,912 in 2015 and 1,972 in 2016. 

The Americans with Disabilities Act classifies difficulties into the 6 categories. To view data by age and disability type click on each of the links below. 

  1. Hearing difficulty: deaf or having serious difficulty hearing (DEAR).
  2. Vision difficulty: blind or having serious difficulty seeing, even when wearing glasses (DEYE).
  3. Cognitive difficulty: Because of a physical, mental, or emotional problem, having difficulty remembering, concentrating, or making decisions (DREM).
  4. Ambulatory difficulty: Having serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs (DPHY).
  5. Self-care difficulty: Having difficulty bathing or dressing (DDRS).
  6. Independent living difficulty: Because of a physical, mental, or emotional problem, having difficulty doing errands alone such as visiting a doctor’s office or shopping (DOUT).

In 2015 the Town of Pembroke had 454 residents (or 2.5% of the population) classified as having hearing difficulties (margin of error +/- 152), 214 residents (or 1.2% of the population) had vision difficulties (margin of error  +/- 107), 645 residents (or 3.8%of the population) had cognitive difficulties (margin of error +/- 204), 917 residents (or 5.3% of the population) had ambulatory difficulties (margin of error +/- 214), 344 residents (or 2.0% of the population) had self care difficulties (margin of error +/- 130) and 635 residents (or 4.6% of the population) had independent living difficulties (margin of error +/- 186). 

In 2016 the Town of Pembroke had 507 residents (or 2.8% of the population) classified as having hearing difficulties (margin of error +/- 153), 356 residents (or 2.0% of the population) had vision difficulties (margin of error  +/- 170), 522 residents (or 3.0% of the population) had cognitive difficulties (margin of error +/- 177), 858 residents (or 4.9% of the population) had ambulatory difficulties (margin of error +/- 229), 337 residents (or 1.9% of the population) had self care difficulties (margin of error +/- 124) and 496 residents (or 3.6% of the population) had independent living difficulties (margin of error +/- 150). 

Gender

In 2016 the American Community Survey estimated that the Town of Pembroke has 898 females (margin of error +/- 341) and 1,074 males (margin of error +/- 351) that have a classified disability.
